SVŠGL, the eco-school
SVŠGL, which stands for Srednja vzgojiteljska šola in gimnazija Ljubljana, is located in the heart of Slovenia's capital city Ljubljana – in Bežigrad. SVŠGL runs 3 different educational programmes: nursery education, secondary school of arts and grammar school. The school has been registered with Slovenian Eco-schools since 2002. It has always been actively involved in the enviromental education and also carried out various school activities ranging from music gigs to sporting events, exhibitions, enviromental workshops and much more. In spite of the fact that the school has three separate and completely different educational programmes, they are all united when help is needed, specifically when they come together and offer aid to the less fortunate. In the school year 2006/2007 the school received the ecoflag and since then they have been succesfully maintaining it. The school has taken part in numerous projects, some of them lasting for a whole year, others being seasonal. Perhaps the best-known project was the ecoclass, which required points that were gained in collecting PVC stoppers, ink and laser cartridges, discarded mobile phones, medicines, electronic appliances and also in cleaning the school's premises. The prestigious ecoclass title was awarded to class 2.a. The other noticeable project was the one entitled 'Revščina v svetu in pri nas' (Poverty in the world and at home) which was widely supported among the students and helped raise money with charity efforts such as (volleyball) matches between the pupils and teachers. The money thus raised went for charity, specifically to the children in Uganda. Other projects also boasted active participation by many and were generally well accepted. All of the projects were designed cross-curricularly. Pupils also created several art works from waste material in the classes of art education. Not only did they make paintings and various other products but also musical instruments from natural and waste material! SVŠGL intends to persist in its eco-awareness and cooperation in eco-projects and will keep the status of ecoschool, hoping that even more of its (and other) students will not only consider the problems of poverty in the world, pollution and other several (and severe) problems - but start taking prompt actions.
